Vote for the Art in the Park People's Choice Award
Voting closes October 31

When Community Park (955 Bella Vista Drive) was in its planning stages, the City Council envisioned a sculpture garden and an area was set aside for that purpose. Three years ago, City Council asked LCC to organize it and put up enough money to fund a loan program for two years. With a lot of assistance from Suzanne Janssen, who started a similar program in Northglenn, the LCC fashioned a similar program.

A formal Call for Entry was put out into the community through the Call For Entry Organization and 12 pieces were submitted. A committee comprised of LCC and Louisville Art Association members reviewed the entries and selected the four pieces that met the criteria for public art and would be the best candidates for permanent installation in the park. Each artist will receive a $500 honorarium.

You can now vote online for your favorite scupture. Voting closes October 31, 2010. The winner will receive a cash prize of $500. The Cultural Council will then try to fundraise the money to purchase the people's choice.

The four sculptures are as follows:

  • "Comforter" by Karen Crain, Littleton, CO - Quiet and reflective piece of a mother and child.
  • "Nature Signs" by Catherine Forster, Crystal Lake, IL - An ethereal sculpture that questions the distinctions between the natural and mediated world.
  • "The Climb" by Maureen Hearty, Denver CO - Brings the balance of organic structures and architectural forms together.
  • "Clorese Bronze I" by Sherrill Stone, Carbondale, CO - A big silly, playful and voluptuous fish!

Children's Concert:
Jeff Kagan and Paige Doughty
Date: Saturday, October 2
Time: 10:30 AM, doors open at 10:15 AM
Venue: Louisville Center for the Arts, 801 Grant Avenue
Cost: $3 children/adults/seniors

Boulder Naturalists/Children's Musicians Jeff Kagan and Paige Doughty head east for their first ever appearance in Louisville. Join them for an hour of live nature music for kids (ages 3-8), educational skits/stories, audience participation, quick costume changes and unexpected surprises. Their music explores the realm of ecological cycles, life in the alpine ecosystem, pollination, bear and mountain lion safety, symbiosis, water purification, water and electricity conservation, alternative transportation and so much more. Now if this sounds a little lofty for the kiddie set, then think again. Each song is instructive, but never preachy. And the messages are delivered in a playful manner with memorable musical hooks designed to captivate children and adults alike.

Coffeehouse Concert
Anasazi Classical String Quartet

Date: Saturday, October 16
Time: 7:30 PM, doors open at 7:00 PM
Venue: Louisville Center for the Arts,
801 Grant Avenue
Cost: $12 Adults, $8 Seniors/Students

The Anasazi String Quartet presents an evening of classical music in a relaxed and inviting atmosphere. Movements from string quartets by more traditional European composers Beethoven and Bartók will be contrasted with modern works by American composers Charles Griffes and Austin Schlichting. The quartet uses these selections as a display of the string quartet's versatility and its appeal to a wide range of audiences. The quartet will speak briefly about each piece throughout the concert to help bridge the gap between the audience, music, and performers.

The Anasazi String Quartet is pursuing graduate studies at the University of Colorado at Boulder. The quartet formed in September, 2009, and in their first year together they have already performed in various venues throughout Colorado, Kansas, Idaho, and Washington state. Audiences have praised them for their passionate and engaging performances, as well as their charisma. As students of the University of Colorado, the Anasazi String Quartet has the privilege of working regularly with the string faculty at CU, including members of the Takács String Quartet.

Gadzukes! Nancy Thorwardson and Patrick Cullie are two ukulele geeks from Lyons, Colorado. Nancy, a noted songwriter and performer, plays resophonic uke and sings like nobody's business. Patrick plays lead baritone and concert ukes and guitar, and doesn't sing like anybody's business. Bret Billings plays steel guitar and harmonica, and Dave Ball rounds out the sound on upright bass. Lively and fun, their repertoire includes original compositions, swing standards, hapa haole tunes from Hawaii, and some surprises along the way.

Gadzukes! first CD, has gotten rave reviews! Dan Willging, in Dirty Linen Magazine, calls the recording a "wonderfully sunny assortment."
