with Boulder County Public Health

Did you know that youth born in the year 2000 or after have a 1 in 3 chance of developing type 2 diabetes? For youth of color, that risk rises to 1 in 2.

We are working to address type 2 diabetes and childhood obesity in Boulder County. As you may know, sugary beverages can lead to significant health problems, putting Colorado youth at risk where nearly 56 percent of high school students consume one or more sugary drinks per day. Just one sugary drink per day puts an individual at risk for obesity, type 2 diabetes, tooth decay, heart disease and liver disease.

We are seeking support for an awesome youth-lead event to promote health in high school students. The event will bring over 100 youth from all across the county together to provide education on the harms of sugary drinks, opportunities for youth to connect and healthy snacks and beverages. Students will learn how much sugar hides in today’s most popular sugary drinks and discover how long it takes to dance off them off.

Youth participants are invited to enter two contests:

• #ShakeOffSugar Instagram Contest – Winners and runner ups for Most Creative post, Best Event Promoter and Most Popular post (most likes)

• Infused Water Recipe – Submit a creatively named recipe for infused water using seasonal and local and domestically available produce and herbs. The top three recipes will be offered and voted on at the event and the winning recipe will be served at local high schools
