Paper Craft Model

The Louisville Grain Elevator is now miniature in size! Thanks to Louisville resident and paper craft model designer, Richard Wheeler, your whole family can have fun assembling a miniature model of the Grain Elevator. This historic building, which was built in 1905-06 and is listed on the National Register of Historic Places, is located at 540 County Road, south of the businesses Lucky Pie and Sweet Cow Ice Cream.

About the Model

  • It takes about an hour to assemble from start to finish; most appropriate for children ages 8 and older.
  • Richard Wheeler designed this model keeping in mind the Elevator's past, as well as a vision of what the Elevator could look like in the future.
  • The model is dark red, the same color the Elevator used to be, and Wheeler hand drew the authentic lettering that appeared on the side of the Elevator (seen in historic photos).

The Louisville History Foundation is supplying the family activity kits, available at the Museum and for the Library program, as a way of promoting its membership program this year. If you enjoy this activity, please let the Museum know, and please consider becoming a member!

Museum Coordinator, Bridget Bacon, has prepared a thorough and interesting historical report on the Louisville Grain Elevator including many photos and illustrations.

My Trip to the Louisville Grain Elevator

It's August 15, 1948, and 9-year-old 'David' is finally old enough to help his father deliver their harvest of Turkey Red Wheat to the Louisville Grain Elevator. David's senses are heightened as he prepares for the exciting day ahead.Through his eyes, we experience the delight in this seemingly ordinary day from a time gone by.
