Planning and Zoning
The Planning Department administers land use regulations in the City including zoning, development review, historic preservation, and long-range planning. They also serve as the first contact for developers and landowners who are considering new development or changes to existing development.
In addition, the Department handles updates to, and the implementation of, the City's Comprehensive Plan. The plan defines the long-range goals and intentions regarding the direction of future development within the City. It contains elements on land use, transportation, community facilities, design, historic preservation, and housing.

The Building Safety Division oversees all building and construction in Louisville. It issues building permits and contractor’s licenses, conducts building, electrical and plumbing inspections, and handles water and sewer tap fees.
The Building Safety Division is adopting the 2018 ICC Buildings Codes effective October 10, 2018. All permits submitted on or after October 10th must adhere to the 2018 codes. If you would like free access to these codes, please click here.
The Building Department no longer requires building permits for like for like window permits. We have amended this requirement with the adoption of the 2018 IRC Code. This amendment is effective now.

Any Commercial work – including signs and fences

Starting 01/20/15 - Over the Counter Plan Review for minor permits every Tuesday from 8:00 am to 12:00 pm.
Permits that qualify are: fences, decks, pergolas, sheds, small residential remodels including basement finishes, hot tubs, gas lines, and size change or new opening for windows or doors.
Any work being done on the exterior where the structure was constructed prior to 1955 cannot be reviewed over the counter
Note: Review times are based on a complete permit submittal. Submittals requiring more information may extend the posted review time.
