Unearthed: Ancient Life in Boulder Valley

Learn about the ancient stone tools found in Boulder — known as the Mahaffy Cache, a collection of 83 stone tools dating back 13,000 years that was discovered in 2008 in a Boulder, Colorado backyard while landscaping for a fishpond. This Clovis cache includes bifacial knives and other tools used for butchering ice age animals like camels, horses, and bears. The find is significant because it's one of the few Clovis caches analyzed for protein residue, providing insight into the lifestyle and travel patterns of early North Americans. The artifacts have been featured in exhibits, such as the one at the CU Museum of Natural History, called "Unearthed: Ancient Life in the Boulder Valley". Find out what science has revealed about them in this interactive discussion of the Unearthed exhibition.
