SH 42 Underpass construction

SH42 Underpass elevational drawings

Construction begins this month on the new SH 42 Underpass Project, which will create a pedestrian underpass between Hecla Drive and Summit View Drive underneath SH 42. Surveyors from Golden-based Edge Contracting are now on site preparing for the construction work that will start mid-September.

The project, approved by the City Council earlier this year, creates a new trail north of Kestral Housing and connects it underneath SH 42 to the trail on the east side of SH 42, which leads to Hecla Lake. The work supports the City’s goal of safe traveling conditions for pedestrians and motorists. The new underpass will encourage more walking, running, and cycling by strengthening the city’s approximately 32 mile trail network with better connectivity.

The project will take approximately a year to complete, and during construction the lanes on SH 42 will shift to accommodate the underpass construction. Please note that the road shoulder will not be available during the lane shift therefore bikes will have to ride in the travel lanes. No complete road closures are anticipated. The City thanks residents and commuters in advance for their patience during the work.

The new underpass is just one part of recent significant investments in transportation, which have included the City’s street paving program, striping of on-street bike lanes, traffic calming at major trail connections and school routes, improvements to the vast sidewalk and trail network, and increased access to transit services. The City is currently working on its draft Transportation Master Plan and residents can share their views on the future of transportation in Louisville by visiting Engage Louisville.
