The seed library is the perfect plot twist for your gardening routine. This innovative program allows library patrons to "borrow" seeds to grow in their gardens and then return a portion of the harvested seeds to the library for others to use.
The seed library has a wide variety of seeds, including native plants, vegetables, herbs and flowers. The library partners with local organizations and seed companies to acquire high-quality, non-GMO seeds that are well-suited for Colorado's climate.
Start Your Own Garden – Big or Small
Anyone who is willing to invest some time every day or two to water and nurture the plants can grow a garden. Seeds can be planted in the ground, in a planting bed or containers. For example, enough lettuce for a salad can be grown in a 12-inch pot on a deck or front porch. Add a few radishes and carrots, also grown in 12-inch containers, for spice and sweetness, and you have a good start on a delicious salad to eat and share. Additionally, growing flowers and native plants also helps with climate resilience, biodiversity and supports our native pollinators.
How to Get Started
The concept behind the seed library is simple: anyone with a library card can check out up to two packets of seeds per growing season. Seeds are a first-come, first served resource. After planting and harvesting the seeds, patrons are encouraged to save some of the seeds and return them to the library for others to use. This allows the library to replenish its seed stock and ensure that the program remains sustainable over time.
The seed library has been a big hit with the Louisville community, with many residents taking advantage of this unique resource. The most popular seeds requested are for native plants. In addition to providing access to high-quality seeds, the library also offers educational resources and gardening programs to help patrons get the most out of their gardens.
