After nearly two decades of serving the community at 951 Spruce Street, the Louisville Public Library has unveiled a refreshed interior featuring new carpeting and paint throughout its public spaces. The project marks the first significant update to the building since it opened in 2006.
"This refresh isn't just about new carpet and paint—it's about renewing our commitment to being the community’s living room," said Kristen Bodine, Interim Director of Cultural Services. "The refreshed space ensures we can continue serving our community's remarkable appetite for learning and connection for decades to come."
A Fresh Look for a Beloved Community Hub
The refresh breathes new life into a space that has become an essential community resource, embodying the City of Louisville's vision of "providing a vibrant, healthy community with the best small-town atmosphere."
A standout feature is 'The Hollow,' a newly designed space in the teen area that exemplifies the collaborative spirit of the library. Local teens developed the vision for this unique space, which features a sophisticated "dark academia" aesthetic with eclectic furniture, moody colors, and classic literary influences. Louisville residents contributed vintage knickknacks to decorate a repurposed bookcase that serves as a focal point, while historic photos from the Historical Museum's collection connect today's young patrons with traditions of the past.
The library's renewed environment aligns with both its mission and the city's broader vision, creating a space where community members can connect with resources and each other, discover new ideas, and grow intellectually and socially.
Breaking Records: Louisville's Library Leads the Way
While the physical space has been refreshed, what happens inside the library continues to impress. Louisville Public Library consistently outperforms other Colorado libraries of similar size across all key metrics:
- Library visits per capita reached 6.02 in 2023, far exceeding the state average of 3.45
- An average of 616 visitors walked through the doors every day in 2024, with annual visits totaling 216,864
- Circulation per capita stands at 18.22, the highest among similarly-sized Colorado libraries and more than double the state average of 8.78
- In 2024 alone, patrons checked out 472,385 physical items and an additional 114,074 digital materials through Overdrive
A Community of Readers
The statistics tell a compelling story of a community that values its library. With approximately 31,000 cardholders in a service area of 34,000 residents, nearly 91% of Louisville and Superior residents hold a library card. The library maintains a collection of 82,000 items and is open seven days a week for a total of 58 hours, making it one of the most accessible public resources in the community.
More Than Just Books
Beyond lending materials, the Louisville Public Library serves as a vibrant and inclusive community center. In 2024, the library hosted 648 programs that attracted 22,639 attendees—ranging from children's storytimes to adult education programs, author talks, and community gatherings.
A highlight of the programming calendar is the annual Summer Reading Challenge, which kicks off with the beloved Summer Carnival. This signature event transforms the area outside the Library's front doors on Front Street at the Steinbaugh Pavilion into a celebration of reading and community spirit. Families gather to enjoy music, bounce houses, carnival games, and treats like cotton candy. By taking the celebration beyond the library walls and into a public space, the event reinforces the central role the library plays in Louisville's community.
