Volunteering for the City of Louisville at the Louisville Historical Museum is a great way to support the efforts of the Museum to collect, preserve, and share the history of Louisville. There are numerous ways people can volunteer with us:

Tours and Special Events Volunteers
The Museum’s Tours and Special Events (TSE) Volunteers are personable individuals who are passionate about Louisville’s history and want to share their love of our town’s past with the public. Our tour interpreters give informal tours to visitors and require good communication skills, an ability to match your knowledge to our visitors’ interests, and a passion for the history of our town.
Special Events Volunteers frequently provide station based historical content or lead hands-on demonstrations for audiences ranging from children to adults. If you like talking to the public about history, don’t mind chatting with audiences of diverse ages, and are excited by crowds, this might be the team for you!
TSE Volunteers typically volunteer once a month in two-hour shifts during programs that might occur in the morning, afternoon, or evening, weekdays or weekends. Volunteers may also assist with event set up or clean up or help with additional Museum projects during public hours. Past experience leading tours or knowledge about Louisville is not required – we’ll teach you everything you need to know!
Oral History Volunteers
Curious about Louisville’s past? Like hearing stories about our town’s history? Our Oral History Volunteer team is made up of individuals interested in interviewing former and current Louisville residents to preserve their stories and memories for generations to come. No experience interviewing people is necessary, although being a good listener and being personable is a must!
This team meets as a group monthly on the third Thursday of the month from 4-5 PM. When not meeting as a team, these volunteers arrange, perform, and record the interviews in pairs. An orientation and training are provided. Oral History Volunteers also assist with processing oral histories by editing videos or transcribing audio recordings.
General/ Administrative Volunteers
Help us stay organized! Administrative volunteers at the Museum are detail-oriented individuals who are interested in carrying out general duties such as organizing print records, filing, updating indexes, photocopying, and data entry. Administrative volunteers should be comfortable working with both printed and digital records and have basic knowledge of operating computer programs like Microsoft Excel and Word. The Museum will provide the training and instruction required for administrative projects. Hours are flexible.
Collections Volunteers
Ever wondered about the items in the Museum’s Collection? We’re looking for tech-savvy teens and adults to work with the collection in a variety of ways! As a Collections Volunteer you could handle documents, photographs, and books that need to be scanned and digitized or work on our collections database ensuring the searchability of the Museum's collection.
Collections Volunteers typically volunteer 2 hours once a week. Due to the detailed nature of the tasks, we have found that periods of at least 2 hours are the most productive and we promise, the time will fly by! Regardless of your Collections tasks, the Museum will provide the handling, training, and quality control required.
History Makers
If you are a craft and handiwork oriented person, the Museum has projects that can use your skills! History Makers with skills in sewing, quilting, knitting, and needlework are needed for supporting our education collection and creating items for engaging the public with hands-on learning. The Museum also occasionally needs help with woodworking, painting, electronics, and other handwork skills. Please reach out if you would like to volunteer or have a special skill to offer. The Museum will provide all instructions and materials for special projects.
