Why It Matters
Louisville is home to over 2,000 acres of open lands filled with preserves, parks, trail systems, and more! These places serve as critical habitat, support biodiversity, and offer residents a direct connection to nature.
These open spaces are more than just recreational assets. They’re essential to our climate resilience, environmental health, and quality of life. As stewards of these lands, we're committed to preserving our natural resources and enhancing opportunities for residents to experience and protect them.
What We’re Doing
A healthy environment is the foundation of a thriving community. From cleaner air and water to mental health and neighborhood livability, ecosystems provide essential benefits to people and wildlife alike. As climate impacts intensify, protecting and restoring these systems is more important than ever.
We're working to strengthen the connections between our built environment and natural ecosystems through smart planning, ecological restoration, and sustainable land use. Our main focus areas currently are: water conservation, healthy tree canopies, and ecology and wildlife.
