 Why It Matters

Our open spaces are home to a wide variety of native wildlife, from birds and pollinators to small mammals and reptiles. These species play a big role in helping us maintain a healthy ecosystem. Native wildlife supports natural pest control, seed dispersal, soil health, and our community's overall beauty and character.

 What We're Doing

Wildlife Coexistence and Habitat Monitoring

The City’s Open Space Division actively monitors and manages wildlife populations to support healthy ecosystems by:

  • Tracking populations of key species, such as prairie dogs, to ensure their sustainable management.
  • Restoring native plant communities that provide food and shelter for birds, mammals, and insects.
  • Using science-based approaches to maintain and enhance habitat quality across Louisville's public lands.

Partnerships for Data-Driven Restoration

We partner with the Colorado Natural Heritage Program (CNHP) and researchers at Colorado State University (CSU) to guide our wildlife management and habitat restoration strategies by:

  • Conducting field surveys to assess species diversity and habitat conditions.
  • Applying ecological research to restoration projects.
  • Monitoring the success of habitat improvements over time.

 Get Involved

You can help protect Louisville’s wildlife and support our local biodiversity!
  • Volunteer:  Join volunteer initiatives that help restore native landscapes, remove invasive species, and improve wildlife habitats in parks and open spaces.
  • Practice wildlife-friendly landscaping: Make your yard a welcome place for native species by planting drought-tolerant, native plants, and reducing pesticide use.
  • Stay informed and engaged: Attend our workshops or events to learn more about local wildlife and best practices for coexistence.
