Strategic grazing is an important land management tool that helps reduce grassland fuels, limit ladder fuels in the understory, control noxious weeds, and support the long-term health of our ecosystems by increasing nutrient cycling through the deposition of organic matter to benefit soil healthy and increase water-holding capacity.

Grazing is part of the City’s efforts to implement recommendations from the 2023 Wildfire Hazard Risk Assessment for Louisville Public Lands

  • The trail will remain open, but temporary trail closures may occur to move livestock from one grazing area to another.

  • There will be a reduction in vegetation height following the grazing time.

2025 Goat Grazing

This fall, goats will be grazing on select Open Space properties. Dates are subject to change due to weather, etc.

Timeline

October 9, 2025 - October 14, 2025

Properties
  • North Open Space (approximately 5 acres)
What to expect
  • A herd of around 200 goats will be on the property day and night and will rotate through several paddocks, enclosed by electrified livestock fencing for safety and containment.
  • Goats will remain contained within designated fenced areas at all times.
  • You will notice a reduction in vegetation height after grazing.
  • Following the grazing period, the site will be rested for a full year to allow native plants to recover, strengthen, and set seed — an important part of restoring healthy ecosystems.
2025 Goat Herd Composition:
  • Boer Goats: Hardy goats known for browsing shrubs and brush. Originally from South Africa, they are typically white with red heads.
  • Nubian Goats: Strong foragers, particularly effective against noxious and broadleaf weeds. This breed has origins in North Africa, India, and the Middle East.

To ensure the safety of both visitors and livestock:

  • Keep pets leashed and under physical control at all times.
  • Do not touch the electric fencing.
  • Respect any temporary trail closures.
  • Refrain from feeding or petting the goats.
