What is a pocket prairie?
A pocket prairie is a small, intentionally planted area of native grasses and wildflowers that mimics the structure and function of a natural prairie ecosystem. These compact habitats—often tucked into parks, yards, medians, or open spaces—support biodiversity by providing food and shelter for pollinators, birds, and other wildlife. Pocket prairies also improve soil health, reduce erosion, manage stormwater, and require less irrigation and maintenance than traditional turf. In urban and suburban settings, they play a vital role in restoring ecological balance.
