Why are there utility locate flags or markings in my yard? 

Have you noticed small colored flags or paint marks in your yard or along the street? These are called "utility locates," and they're part of a critical safety process to protect underground utilities during digging or construction.

Why are they there?
Can I find out who requested them?
How long do the marks last?
Why are they in my yard if I'm not doing any work?
