Permit Inspections

Building inspections help ensure that work completed under a permit meets adopted building, electrical, plumbing, mechanical, and energy code requirements. All inspections for permits issued by the City of Louisville must be requested through the online CSS Portal.

Important reminders

  • Approved plans and permits must remain on-site during inspections.
  • Furnace, A/C, and water heater inspections follow special inspection procedures.
  • The Building Department does not conduct furnace, A/C, or water heater inspections directly with homeowners.

Before you schedule an inspection

Please make sure:

  • Your permit has been issued.
  • Approved plans and permit documents are available on-site.
  • The work is ready for inspection.
  • The inspection type matches the work being inspected.

The cutoff time for next business day inspections is 4:00 PM. Requests submitted after 4:00 PM will automatically move to the next available business day.

How to schedule an inspection

  1. Go to the CSS Online Portal
  2. Log into your account.
  3. Click View > My Permits.
  4. Select your permit record.
  5. Open the Inspections tab.
  6. Select the inspection(s) needed under the Required Inspections section.
  7. Enter: Preferred inspection date, Contact name and phone number
  8. Any site access information (gate code, lockbox, etc.)
  9. Submit the request.
  10. When your inspection has been completed, inspection results can be viewed directly through the CSS Portal under the Inspections tab of your permit record. Inspection results are also emailed to the contractor or site contact after the inspection is completed.

Please only use the “Other” inspection types if no standard inspection type applies to your project.

Certificates of Occupancy and Completion are reviewed by staff within three business days of the passed Building Final.

If there are missing items or unpaid fees, staff will contact you regarding these items, and once completed, the Certificate can be issued.

Inspection time frames

Inspectors create their own daily schedules, so specific inspection times cannot be guaranteed through the portal. If you would like an estimated arrival window:

  1. Go to Today’s Scheduled Inspections in the portal.
  2. Search by permit number or property address.
  3. Contact the assigned inspector directly.

Cancel your inspection

If you need to cancel an inspection, please email the Building Department at building@louisvilleco.gov before 8:30AM.

Once the Building staff has scheduled your inspection, you no longer have the option to cancel the inspection through the portal.

Re-inspection process and fees

Failed inspections and missed inspections are charged a re-inspection fee. You will be unable to request any inspections until this has been paid.

To view your invoice and pay online, go to the CSS Online Portal, in the upper right corner it will display your name, under this drop down, click on "Invoices."

For a failed inspection:

  1. Pay the invoice for the re-inspection fee.
  2. Once the fee is paid, the permit will no longer be on hold and you can request another inspection.

For a missed inspection (for example: missed midroof):

  1. The permit will be on hold and the re-inspection fee must be paid.
  2. Once the fee is paid, staff will be notified.
  3. An inspector will call the contractor to set up a day and time to meet to complete the inspection.
  4. You will not be able to schedule this online, the inspector assigned will complete the inspection for you.

Furnace, A/C, and water heater inspections

HVAC inspections follow a different process. We do not conduct these inspections with the property owner. Learn more:
