Traffic Safety
Unsafe traffic conditions is the most common complaint we hear from residents, so we’ve taken steps to improve traffic safety across Louisville. The City and our Police Department are committed to addressing traffic safety concerns through a combination of education, enforcement, and community engagement. Louisville Police Department Officers conduct targeted traffic enforcement in areas with high crash rates and frequent complaints, while also focusing on driver awareness and voluntary compliance with traffic laws.

What is the City doing?
We're working on short and long-term solutions to address traffic safety. So far, we have:
- Considered short-term speed management tools
- Held public meetings
- Enhanced crosswalks
- Improved signage
- Worked with the Police Department to increase traffic enforcement
- Created a Transportation Master Plan
In particular, we carried out a series of improvements on South Boulder Road. These improvements included more accessible sidewalks and crosswalks, building a pedestrian island, and improving street markings.
What can you do?
As a driver, please drive slowly and courteously. Make our streets safer and friendlier by driving the speed limit.
According to the CDC, distracted driving kills 9 people everyday. You can limit the risks of distracted driving by using the “Do Not Disturb” setting on your phone. Or, download a mobile application that restricts use of your phone while driving.
As a pedestrian or bicyclist, please follow signage and other traffic safety tools. Cross at designated crosswalks and stop at signs and traffic signals and follow their cues.
You can also sign up for enotifications and select Traffic Safety Updates under News.

If you have concerns about speeding on your street, you can apply for a traffic-calming solution. City staff will then use data to evaluate your street to see if it qualifies for traffic-calming improvements. Your street will qualify if we can verify that there is an objective speed hazard. We prioritize projects based on the severity of the issue and the availability of funding.
