Property and evidence

The Louisville Police Department's Property and Evidence Division securely receives, documents, stores and disposes of evidence, found property and property held for safekeeping while protecting the integrity and chain of custody of every item entrusted to the Department.

Claiming your property

Before visiting the Police Department, please call 303-335-4637 to confirm that your property is eligible for release and to set an appointment for pickup.

When picking up property, please bring a valid government-issued photo ID.

Property held as evidence

Property connected to a criminal investigation or court proceeding cannot be released until it is no longer needed as evidence and its release has been authorized.

Property belonging to a crime victim will be returned as promptly as possible when it is no longer needed as evidence.

Closing a case does not automatically authorize the release of every item. Court proceedings, appeals and other legal requirements may affect how long evidence must be retained.

Found property

To report or turn in found property, call the Louisville Police Department’s non-emergency line at 303-441-4444. An officer will provide instructions.

If you have lost an item in Louisville, such as a cell phone, bicycle, backpack, wallet, keys or other personal property, contact the Louisville Police Department’s Property and Evidence Division to find out whether it has been turned in.

If an item appears dangerous, contains suspected drugs or may be connected to a crime, do not handle or transport it. Call 911 for an immediate hazard or 303-441-4444 for a non-emergency situation.

The Department makes reasonable efforts to identify and contact the owners of found property. Unclaimed property may later be auctioned, transferred or destroyed as permitted by law and Department policy.

Firearms

Firearms are subject to additional legal and safety requirements. Before a firearm may be released, the Department must verify that the person receiving it is legally permitted to possess it. Additional review, documentation and a criminal history records check may be required.

Please contact the Police Department before attempting to retrieve a firearm.

Unclaimed property and disposal

Property that remains unclaimed after the applicable retention period may be auctioned or destroyed in accordance with Colorado law and Department policy.

Contraband, narcotics, certain weapons and other property restricted by law cannot be returned.
