About the Cultural Services Department

Cultural Services Department

The Cultural Services Department is where Louisville's community life comes alive. We oversee the City's public library, historical museum, and arts, culture, and events programming. These three divisions are distinct, but they share one commitment: the people of Louisville.

Arts & Culture

From the murals on our walls to the crowds on our streets, Arts & Culture shapes Louisville's creative life.

Here is some of what we do:

  • We manage the City's public art collection.
  • We engage artists through Calls for Art and Proposals.
  • We support cultural programs that bring the community together.

Louisville is also known for its community events, including Summer Concerts in the Park, Independence Day celebrations, and the region's only Labor Day Parade, which draws more than 5,000 participants. These shared experiences are part of what makes Louisville feel like home. You can learn more about them on ourĀ City Events site.

About the Cultural Advisory Board

The Cultural Advisory Board has a long history of supporting arts and culture in Louisville. Here is how it grew over time:

  • It was created in 1989 under the name Louisville Arts and Humanities Council.
  • Later, the name was changed to the Louisville Cultural Council, or LCC.
  • For many years, the Board worked as an independent nonprofit.
  • It then chose to end its nonprofit status and become a City advisory board.
