Who can apply?

We welcome applications from:

• New police officer candidates: You are not yet Colorado POST certified.
• POST-certified officers: You already have Colorado POST certification and are looking for a new opportunity.

Hiring process

The hiring process may vary depending on your experience and qualifications. Most applicants complete these steps:

Step 1: Apply online

Submit your application through the City's employment website.

Step 2: Interview

Meet with members of the Police Department and City staff.

Step 3: Written test

Complete a pass/fail written exam.

Step 4: Background check

We review your employment history, education, references, and other required information.

Step 5: Polygraph

Complete a polygraph examination.

Step 6: Psychological evaluation

Meet with a licensed professional to determine if you're ready for the job.

Step 7: Medical exam

Complete a medical screening.

If you're not POST certified

If you're selected:

• You'll be hired as a Police Cadet.
• You'll attend a regional police academy.
• Academy training takes about six months.
• After completing the academy, you'll continue your training with the department.

If you're already POST certified

If you're selected:

• You'll be hired as a Police Officer.
• You'll begin field training shortly after you start work.

Preferred qualifications

These qualifications are preferred but not required:

• 60 college credit hours (about two years of college), or
• Two years of military service.
