Water restrictions

(Updated 07/16/2026)

Louisville residents encouraged to conserve water, keep Louisville "In the Blue"

There are currently no mandatory water restrictions in Louisville, but residents are encouraged to observe voluntary water restrictions.

Our Public Works team has continued closely monitoring water supply during this historic drought. While voluntary restrictions have been helpful, we are trending toward needing to implement mandatory restrictions. Reduced water use in combination with predicted increased rainfall coming soon could help “Keep Louisville in the Blue” (see chart below) and avoid mandatory restrictions.

Let's keep Louisville in the blue graphic with "we are here" marker on the Moderate/voluntary conservation stage

Water levels are moderate, and we may need to implement mandatory restrictions

There are currently no mandatory restrictions in Louisville, but participation in the voluntary restrictions outlined below is necessary to avoid mandatory restrictions.

Report water waste

If you see significant water waste, including broken or leaking irrigation on public or private property, report it using the City Problem Reporter. The City will investigate these reports and follow-up with property owners whenever possible. Wasting of water is prohibited in Louisville according to section 13.08.120 of our Municipal Code.

Limit watering to twice a week, between 6 p.m. and 10 a.m.

  • We highly encourage you to limit watering (irrigation and hand-watering) to two days per week, between the hours of 6 p.m. and 10 a.m.
  • If you have a sprinkler company, ask them to adjust your scheduled to follow the voluntary restrictions above
  • Hand water gardens, shrubs, and trees on the same schedule.

Smart watering tips

  • Aim sprinklers at grass and plants — not streets and sidewalks
  • Promptly repair leaking sprinkler systems.
  • Use buckets or a hose nozzle with a shut-off valve if washing your car

City following best practices for conserving water while maintaining infrastructure

We know that maintaining what we have is a key priority for the community. Thoughtful decisions are being made to reduce water use while protecting the community's land, infrastructure, and public spaces for the long-term.

You've probably noticed that Louisville Sports Complex, Miner's Field, Coal Creek Golf Course, and Community Park are being irrigated normally. That's because these locations are irrigated with reuse/reclaimed water. Using this non-potable reuse water for turf irrigation preserves treated water supply for higher-priority needs. Reclaimed water would otherwise go unused and be returned to Coal Creek.

Ways to make your yards more waterwise

Resource Central programs

The City, in partnership with Resource Central, offers programs to help residents use water more efficiently and create beautiful, low-water landscapes. Available resources include:

Northern Water also has a variety of valuable landscape resources with a wealth of information. Take advantage of these programs to reduce water use, save money, and choose plants and grasses that are well-adapted to Colorado's climate.

Collect rainwater with a rain barrel

It's been raining — do you have a rain barrel? Rain barrels conserve water by collecting rainwater that would otherwise run off your roof and into storm drains, allowing you to store and reuse this captured water to irrigate your lawn and garden.

Stay tuned for updates

The City continues to monitor conditions and water supply projections to make thoughtful recommendations for restrictions. We will keep you updated.

Every gallon counts! Thank you for all you've done to save water this summer. We appreciate your continued help as we look forward to some much-needed moisture.
