Electric vehicles
Transportation is one of the largest sources of climate pollution in the U.S. and in Louisville. Electric vehicles (EVs) offer a cleaner, quieter alternative to fossil fuel-powered vehicles. This helps reduce local air pollution and cut our greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions. Switching to an EV can be one of the most impactful steps you can take to support a healthier, more sustainable future here in Louisville. EVs are becoming more affordable thanks to lower maintenance costs, expanded charging infrastructure, and more incentives.
We're working to make EVs more accessible by expanding both our public and internal EV charging infrastructure. We also partner with Xcel Energy, Partners in Energy, and other organizations to support EV-friendly incentives.
What is an Electric Vehicle (EV)?
EVs are cars, trucks, buses, and other vehicles that run fully or partially on electricity instead of gasoline or diesel. There are two main types:
- Battery Electric Vehicles (BEVs). BEVs run entirely on electricity. They produce zero tailpipe emissions.
- Plug-in Hybrid Electric Vehicles (PHEVs). PHEVS use electricity for shorter trips. They also have a gasoline engine as a backup for longer trips.
