Establish electrification goals

Why it matters

Powering your home and vehicle with clean energy can save you money, improve your comfort, and reduce local pollution, creating a healthier, more sustainable community for everyone in Louisville.

Follow along below to see how you can get a greener, cleaner home and ride.

What to do

The first step in understanding your energy use is to plan. Here you will better understand your energy use, set your goals, and explore your options.

Know your starting point

Start with your energy bill: How much energy do you use, when do you use it the most, and what does it cost you?

Set your goals

Electrification is not a one-size-fits-all journey. Different investments yield different benefits, so consider what matters most to you. See the table below to explore the benefits of different electrification pathways.

*The greenhouse gas reduction potential increases as more renewable energy is added to Xcel Energy’s grid, or when on-site renewable energy is used to power equipment.

Identify your opportunities

Use the prompts below to guide your planning and decide which upgrades make sense for you.

  1. Home energy efficiency. Ask yourself: Could better insulation or windows improve your comfort and reduce energy loss?
  2. Electric appliances. Ask yourself: What gas heating systems do you have (furnace, stove, water heater)? Which can be replaced with electric appliances?
  3. Electric vehicles. Ask yourself: Are you planning to purchase or lease a vehicle soon? Do you have electric vehicle (EV) charging access?
  4. Renewable energy. Ask yourself: Is your residence a good fit for solar? If not, could a renewable energy subscription work?
  5. Behavioral changes. Ask yourself: How can you use less energy each day? Can you shift your energy use to off-peak times to save money?
  6. Put it all together. Based on your goals, opportunities, and home readiness, what might you tackle first? You don’t need all the answers now! Part two, Invest in Efficiency, provides you with tools, contractors, and incentives.
