Energy

Why it matters

Electricity and natural gas usage in homes and businesses are the largest source of greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions in Louisville.

Reducing GHG emissions helps us meet our sustainability and climate goals and build a healthier, more resilient community.

What we're doing

Since adopting our first Sustainability Action Plan in 2016 and setting science-based climate targets in 2024, Louisville has made measurable progress in:

  • Boosting energy efficiency
  • Expanding renewable energy
  • Electrifying heating and water

Get involved

We need your help in achieving our goal of net-zero GHG emissions. Whether you’re a homeowner, renter, business owner, or environmental advocate, your choices help us make all the difference.

Louisville has already been moving the needle to support your next steps in saving energy and costs. Be sure to check out our vast program offerings--there's something for everyone.

Energy efficiency is one of the best ways you can cut your greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions and save money. If we reduce the amount of energy we waste in our buildings, we can lower our operating costs, improve comfort in public and private spaces, and meet our climate goals faster.

Louisville is improving efficiency in municipal buildings to save energy and reduce emissions. Current projects include:

  • Energy audits: Completed ASHRAE Level 1 audits in 2021 at the Recreation and Senior Center, Library, Police and Court, City Services, and City Hall.
  • Facility upgrades: Invested $600,000 in heating, ventilation, and air conditioning (HVAC), lighting, and control system improvements across municipal facilities.
  • Strategic Energy Management (SEM): Currently participating in Xcel Energy’s SEM program to achieve ongoing energy and cost savings.

You can make a difference at home and in your business by improving efficiency, too!

Switching to clean energy sources like wind and solar helps Louisville use less fossil fuels. It also cuts pollution and makes our local energy system stronger and more reliable.

By leading with clean energy, Louisville is helping to create a cleaner future and support Colorado’s growing renewable energy jobs and businesses.

You can help us accelerate the clean energy transition by:

pace heating and hot water make up a large share of Louisville's overall building energy use and greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions.

By switching from natural gas systems to clean electric systems, we can cut our pollution, improve indoor and outdoor air quality, and lower long-term energy costs for all residents and businesses in Louisville.

We're prioritizing heating and hot water electrification in our municipal facilities and in the community at large.

Some of our key efforts include:

  • On-site solar at water facilities: We installed solar arrays at the Water Treatment and Wastewater Treatment Plants to directly power critical water operations.
  • Residential incentives: Louisville partners with Boulder County’s EnergySmart program to provide rebates for highly efficient electric appliances in existing homes.
  • Forward-looking energy codes: We continuously update our building codes to require electric-ready construction for both new builds and renovations.

You can make an impact by upgrading your own heating and hot water systems.
