Protect wildlife: Do not leave fishing line behind
Discarded fishing line is a serious hazard for local wildlife. Most anglers use monofilament line because it is strong and durable. However, this plastic line takes about 600 years to break down in the environment.
When fishing line is left on the shore or in the water, birds and other animals can easily become tangled. This can prevent them from flying, swimming, or finding food, leading to severe injuries or death.
Fishing line recycling program
We have partnered with Boat U.S. Foundation and Berkley to place fishing line recycling bins at our lakes. Look for them on your next visit!
For questions regarding local fishing rules, email our Parks, Recreation and Open Space rangers.
How you can protect the environment
You can help protect our local ecosystems by taking these actions:
- Pack it out: Never leave fishing line behind. Clean up all your gear, and pick up discarded line left by others.
- Dispose properly: Place used fishing line securely in the trash or fishing line recycling receptacle.
- Recover snags: Do your best to safely recover line that gets caught on rocks or branches to prevent litter.
- Maintain equipment: Replace old fishing line regularly so it does not get brittle, break, and get lost in the water.
- Report tangled wildlife: If you see an injured or tangled animal, report it immediately for help.
- Pass it on: Tell others why it's important to clean up after fishing.
By doing these things, you can help protect wildlife and keep our lakes and parks clean for everyone.
