Learn about disaster preparedness

The City prepares for all types of disasters through awareness, education, planning, and mitigation efforts. We work closely with community partners to identify and prepare for hazards.

We are in the process of joining the Boulder Office of Disaster Management in 2026 to increase our capacity and ability to provide excellent response and recovery efforts in a disaster.

Hazard specific preparedness

How you can prepare for disasters

Being prepared helps keep you and your family safe. Use the tools below to get ready.

  1. Assess your risks. Understand potential hazards and how prepared you are to meet basic needs like food, water, health care, power, and transportation. Evaluate your personal risk.
  2. Create a plan. Develop an actionable plan to prepare for and respond to a disaster, including how you'll communicate, where you'll go to evacuate, and what you'll take with you.
  3. Sign up for alerts. Boco Alert is Boulder County's emergency alert system that notifies you of emergencies and important information, if you register and opt in.
  4. Build a grab bag and create a grab list. A grab list helps you leave quickly if needed. Use the 7 P's to remember what matters most:
    1. People (including neighbors)
    2. Pets
    3. PCs & phones
    4. Prescriptions
    5. Papers (vital documents)
    6. Plastic (wallet, cards, ID's)
    7. Pictures (irreplaceable items)
