Street Resurfacing Protocol and Plans
The City has a specific 5-year plan for street resurfacing and a protocol for when streets are resurfaced. Every year, Public Works checks the condition of all 263 lane miles of City streets. Each street gets a score from 0 to 100; the higher the score, the better the road. The City uses that score, plus things like traffic and drainage, to decide which streets get fixed first. Fixing streets early costs much less than waiting until they fall apart.
Depending on how bad a street is, the City may fill cracks, add a protective seal coat, patch bad spots, grind down the top layer and repave it, or in the worst cases, tear the whole street out and start over. Cracked sidewalks, curbs, and gutters that hold water are also replaced as part of the annual project.
